Shares of biotechnology companies opened mixed Thursday after ImClone Systems Inc. reported a big loss for the first quarter, while Gilead Sciences Inc. released positive data from a drug study.
The American Stock Exchange's biotechnology index fell 18.7 points, or 2.5 percent, to 738.37. The index tracks several bellwether stocks. The Nasdaq Stock Market's biotechnology index, which covers a broader range of small- and midcap stocks, fell 8.76 points, to 794.63.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 30.13 points to 12,733.09, while the technology heavy Nasdaq fell 18.24 points to 2,386.97. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 6.54 points to 1,373.39.

New York-based ImClone Systems, down $1.82, or 3.7 percent, to $46.93.
South San Francisco, Calif.-based Genentech Inc., down 59 cents to $73.10.
Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based Amgen Inc., down 49 cents to $42.20.
Foster City, Calif.-based Gilead Sciences gained 39 cents to $50.87.
