The Nasdaq 100 index rose in midday trading Monday as Wall Street reacted to news Warren Buffett and Mars Inc. offered to buy Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. for about $23 billion, and billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian said he would boost his stake in Ford Motor Co. to 5.6 percent.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, gained 9.36 points to 1,927.94 in midday trading. The broader Nasdaq composite added 0.45 points to 1,398.29.
Shares of Intuitive Surgical Inc. helped lift the index, rising $6.58, or 2.4 percent, to $286.36.
Shares of Juniper Networks Inc. gained 78 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $27.50.
Shares of Garmin Ltd. added $1.13, or 2.5 percent, to $47.22.
On the dropping side, shares of United Airlines parent UAL Corp. fell 68 cents, or 4.5 percent, to $15.53 amid reports it is in talks to combine with US Airways. In other sector news, Continental Airlines said it would stay independent and crude oil prices rallied on the Nymex.
Shares of Broadcom Corp. fell $1.30, or 4.6 percent, to $36.69.
Shares of Tellabs Inc. shed 19 cents, or 3.5 percent, to $5.19.
