NC officials say 900 jobs will come to Wilmington

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy will bring 900 jobs to the Wilmington area over the next five years as it expands its world headquarters in New Hanover County.

Gov. Mike Easley said Wednesday the company plans to invest $704 million to bring new manufacturing and testing facilities to its 1,300-acre campus. GE Hitachi is expected to receive as much as $25.7 million in state incentives if the jobs are created and sustained for 12 years.

The company designs nuclear reactors, and its expansion comes amid increasing interest in nuclear power. The state's largest utilities, Duke Energy Corp. and Progress Energy Inc., are considering building nuclear plants to meet electricity needs.

GE Hitachi employs more than 4,400 people in North Carolina, including more than 2,000 in New Hanover County.

General Electric Co., based in Fairfield, Conn., and Hitachi Ltd. last July launched a joint nuclear business to capitalize on rising demand for electricity and increasing concerns about carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired plants.
