The Nasdaq 100 rallied Thursday as Symantec Corp. offered better-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter earnings and guided first-quarter results above Wall Street expectations.
Security software company Symantec rose $2.12, or 12.3 percent, to $19.34.
The Nasdaq 100 index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, rose 62.74 points, or 3.3 percent, to 1,980.44. The broader Nasdaq composite jumped 67.91 points, or 2.8 percent, to 2,480.71.
Comcast Corp., the country's biggest cable operator, rose $1.76, or 8.6 percent, to $22.31, after adjusted profit met Wall Street expectations.
UAL Corp., which operates United Airlines, gained $1.20, or 8.1 percent, to $16.10, as the price of oil fell. Fuel is one of an airline's biggest expenses.
On the losing side, shares of Hologic Inc. declined $5.44, or 18.6 percent, to $23.75, as the medical technology company's second-quarter results did little to enthuse investors.
Shares of Akamai Technologies Inc. slid $1.40, or 3.9 percent, to $34.37, despite sharply higher first-quarter profit.
Shares of Steel Dynamics Inc. shed 82 cents, or 2.4 percent, at $34.03.
