General Mills Inc. said Monday its board elected Kendall J. Powell, the food maker's chief executive, to the additional position of chairman.
The appointment is effective May 23, when Stephen W. Sanger is scheduled to retire as chairman after 34 years with the company.
Sanger, 62, was elected chairman and chief executive in 1995. Powell, 54, joined the company in 1979 and became chief executive in September 2007.
General Mills shares rose 16 cents to $61.83 in afternoon trading.
