Shares of aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. made the biggest gain on the Dow Jones industrial average Tuesday, as the benchmark index recovered from early losses to finish in positive territory.
The blue chip index rose 51.86 points to close at 13,020.83.
Alcoa lead the 17 rising Dow stocks, as its shares rose $1.11, or 3 percent, to $38.
Shares of Microsoft Corp. ended with a gain of 62 cents, or 2.1 percent, at $29.70.
American International Group Inc. added $1.01, or 2.1 percent, to $48.40. The insurer fell 3.4 percent in Monday trading.
Shares of Procter & Gamble Co. were unchanged at $66.65, and 12 Dow stocks finished lower, lead by retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which slipped 62 cents to $56.35.
After rival Qwest posted a 35-percent decline in its first-quarter profit, shares of AT&T Inc. lost 29 cents to $39.56.
Fast food chain operator McDonald's Corp. fell 38 cents to $60.49.
