Shares of construction and engineering companies finished mostly lower Wednesday, giving up earlier gains as the broader markets slipped and oil prices surged to a fresh record high.

How some shares of construction and engineering companies ended:

Shaw Group Inc., down $1.19, or 2.3 percent, to $50.12.

Pike Electric Corp., down 20 cents to $15.30.

McDermott International, off $2.10, or 3.8 percent, to $53.09.

Chicago Bridge & Iron, up 71 cents to $38.80.
