Zumiez Inc., which sells clothing and equipment for skateboarding and snowboarding, said Wednesday its April same-store sales rose 4.1 percent, beating Wall Street estimates.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected a same-store sales increase of 2.3 percent.
Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least one year, is an important indicator of retailer performance because it measures sales at existing stores rather than newly opened ones.
In the year-ago period, the company's same-store sales rose 3 percent.
Total net sales rose 20 percent to $24.2 million from $20.2 million in the same month of 2007, Zumiez said.
Zumiez shares fell 64 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $20.28 in afternoon trading.
