The Nasdaq 100 index rose in Thursday trading even as crude-oil prices crossed $124 per barrel and Wall Street absorbed a mixed bag of April same-store sales data.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, jumped 15.44 points to 1,966.86 in Thursday trading. The broader Nasdaq composite added 12.75 points to 2,451.24.
Shares of Discovery Holding Co., which owns the Animal Planet channel and others, rose $2.34, or 10 percent, to $25.75.
Shares of construction and engineering company Foster Wheeler Ltd. gained $3.72, or 5.7 percent, to $68.88.
Shares of Level 3 Communications Inc. gained 15 cents, or 4.9 percent, to $3.23.
On the losing side, shares of Hansen Natural Corp. dropped $5.46, or 15.3 percent, to $30.14 after the beverage maker's first-quarter profit missed Wall Street's expectations.
Shares of Liberty Global Inc. shed 13 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $35.21 after the company posted a first-quarter loss on higher interest payments and losses on derivatives.
Shares of Staples Inc. slipped 49 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $21.44.
