Shares of most insurers rose early Thursday as broader markets advanced on better-than-expected retail sales reports.

Industry heavyweight American International Group Inc. reports first-quarter earnings later in the day.

Shares of AIG rose 6 cents to $45.14.

Shares of Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. rose 16 cents to $70.10.

Mortgage insurer MGIC Investment Corp.'s shares rose 15 cents to $13.07.

Shares of bond insurer MBIA Inc. rose 17 cents to $10.82.
