Clothing retailer Urban Outfitters Inc. said Thursday its first-quarter sales at stores open at least a year rose 10 percent, helped by strong growth in its Anthropologie and Free People brands.
Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, is a key measure of retailer performance, because it measures growth at existing stores rather than from newly-opened ones.
The company posted same-store sales growth of 10 percent at its Anthropologie women's clothing and home accessories chain, 19 percent growth in its Free People brand and 10 percent growth in its namesake stores.
Total sales for the three months ended April 30 increased 25 percent to $394.3 million.
The company plans to open about 45 new stores during fiscal 2009. Urban Outfitters will report quarterly results on May 15.
Urban Outfitters operates 129 Urban Outfitters stores in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and 109 Anthropologie stores.
