Shares of large pharmaceutical companies closed lower Friday as the broader market tumbled over wider-than-expected losses at insurer American International Group Inc. and a spike in oil prices.

How some key drug makers performed Friday:

Wyeth, down 46 cents to $43.93.

Merck & Co., down 10 cents to $38.99

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., down $1.08, or 4.7 percent, to $21.71.

Schering-Plough, down 6 cents to $18.65.
