The American Apparel & Footwear Association spent more than $230,000 in the first quarter to lobby on trade agreements, piracy issues and other matters, according to a disclosure report.
The trade group _ whose members include Hanesbrands Inc., Wolverine World Wide Inc., and Perry Ellis International Inc. _ also lobbied the federal government on legislation to end a U.S. government-imposed import tariffs on shoes that can run as high as 67.5 percent a pair.
The trade group is part of a coalition that contends eliminating taxes for all children's shoes and other categories would save money for lower-income families and boost the footwear industry's flat sales.
In the January-to-March period, the trade group lobbied Congress, Consumer Product Safety Commission, U.S. Trade Representative's office and numerous other agencies, including Defense, Commerce, Transportation, according to the report filed April 17 with the House clerk's office.
