Shares of construction and engineering companies traded lower as the broader market slumped on higher oil prices and a steep quarterly loss from insurer American International Group Inc.

Meanwhile, a Robert W. Baird analyst downgraded shares of electrical contractor Pike Electric Corp. to "Neutral" from "Outperform" in a client note Friday, saying its fiscal third-quarter earnings missed estimates.

How shares of some construction and engineering companies are performing:

Pike Electric, down $1.68, or 11 percent, to $13.59.

Foster Wheeler Ltd., down 53 cents to $68.35.

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., off $1.38 to $86.69.

McDermott International Inc., down $1.46, or 2.6 percent, to $54.03.
