Aluminum maker Alcoa Inc. was the top midday gainer among Dow Jones industrial average stocks Monday after an analyst raised his estimates for aluminum prices.
The blue chip index advanced 98.92 points to 12,844.80.
John Hill of Citi Investment Research "sharply" raised his estimates for aluminum 47, or 3.8 percent, to $40.50.
Shares of Bank of America Corp. added 73 cents to $37.38.
Software maker Microsoft Corp. gained 48 cents to $29.87.
Only five of the 30 Dow stocks moved lower at midday. Shares of telecommunications company Verizon Communications Inc. slipped 27 cents to $37.64 after rival Sprint Nextel Corp. reported disappointing first-quarter results.
Insurer American International Group Inc. lost 38 cents to $39.90.
Oil company Chevron Corp. declined 41 cents to $96.99.
