Shares of Hewlett-Packard Co., Verizon Communications Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. rose Wednesday and helped send the Dow Jones industrial average to a higher close.
Hewlett-Packard rose $1.37, or 3.1 percent, to $45.64. On Tuesday, the company revealed plans to buy Electronic Data Systems Corp. for $25 per share.
Verizon Communications Inc. gained 84 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $38.95.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. rose $1.04 to $57.45, helping to reverse losses from Tuesday when the world's largest retailer forecast second-quarter profit mostly below expectations.
The blue chip index advanced 66.20 points to 12,898.38, with 25 stocks ending higher.
On the losing side, Caterpillar Inc., McDonald's Corp., and Procter & Gamble Co. recorded declines.
Caterpillar's stock shed $1.32 to $82.75. Deere & Co.'s outlook of high raw material costs weighed on shares of farm equipment companies.
McDonald's Corp. retreated 73 cents to $60.44.
Procter & Gamble Co. shed 23 cents to $65.50. The consumer products maker named a new chief technology officer.
