Shares of investment banks were mostly up Thursday, trading in a narrow range as Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke spoke at the central bank's conference in Chicago.
Bernanke said he was "encouraged" by banks recent efforts to raise cash to help relieve the ongoing credit crisis, but also said financial institutions need to improve their ability to detect and protect themselves against risks.
Here's how some investment banks were faring in morning trading:
Bear Stearns Cos. shares rose 5 cents to $10.16.
Shares of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. fell $1.45 to $188.68.
Shares of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. rose 61 cents to $42.84.
Merrill Lynch & Co. shares added 84cents to $49.71.
Morgan Stanley shares rose 33 cents to $47.29.
