Shares of large pharmaceutical companies opened mostly lower Thursday as the broader market saw a mixed opening on a government report of higher jobless claims and a report that industrial production dropped by more than expected in April.

Merck & Co., down 12 cents to $39.70
Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., up 2 cents to $21.63.
Pfizer Inc., down 7 cents to $19.98.
