The Standard & Poor's SmallCap 600 Index edged higher at midday Thursday, with Spartan Stores Inc. hitting a 52-week high after posting higher fiscal fourth-quarter earnings.
The S&P SmallCap 600 Index rose 1.78 points, or 390.40. The S&P SmallCap 600 Index tracks stocks with a market capitalization between $300 million and $2 billion.
Spartan Stores rose $2.48, or 11.7 percent, to $23.71. Late Wednesday, the grocery store operator and grocery distributor said its fourth-quarter profit rose 12 percent to 37 cents per share.
Shares of Woodward Governor Co., which makes energy control devices, rose $3.58, or 10.4 percent, to $38.22. Earlier in the session, the stock hit a 52-week high or $38.57.
Shares of Noven Pharmaceuticals climbed 97 cents, or 9.9 percent, to $10.75.
Among the declining shares, Building Materials Holding Corp. tumbled after the company said it would close its residential framing and concrete operations in Tucson, Ariz., due to the housing market slump. Shares lost 42 cents, or 12.1 percent, to $3.06, and earlier traded as low as $2.90 it's lowest point in a year.
Shares of Steak n Shake Co. sank 94 cents, or 12.3 percent, to $6.68 after the restaurant chain operator said it swung to a fiscal second-quarter loss on tougher competition and the weaker U.S. economy. Earlier in the session, shares hit a 52-week low of $6.57.
And shares of regional bank Corus Bankshares Inc. lost 34 cents, or 6.4 percent, to $5.
