Shares of biotechnology companies opened mostly lower Wednesday as the broader markets were mixed ahead of a government report on crude oil inventories. The Dow Jones Industrials slipped 16 points, while the S&P 500 edged up 2 points.

Here's how several key biotechnology stocks performed Wednesday:

Celgene Corp., down 75 cents to $58.25.

Amgen Inc., up 18 cents to $42.63.

Biogen Idec Inc., down 32 cents to $62.74.

Genentech Inc., down 45 cents to $69.01.
