Shares of Citigroup Inc. made the largest midday gain on the Dow Jones industrial average Thursday as the blue chip index alternated between gains and losses.
At about midday, the Dow rose 10.37 points to 12,611.56, and 19 of its 30 component stocks were in positive territory.
Shares of diversified financial services companies rose with Citigroup stock adding 43 cents, or 2 percent, to $21.49.
Shares of credit card issuer American Express Co. gained 73 cents to $46.21.
Coca Cola Co. shares rose 68 cents to $57.33.
On the losing side, shares of automaker General Motors Corp. slid 44 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $18.68.
Aluminum maker Alcoa Inc. fell 57 cents to $41.13 after Merrill Lynch analyst David Lipschitz downgraded the stock to "Neutral" from "Buy."
Shares of heavy machinery maker Caterpillar Inc. lost $1.16 to $82.24.
