The Consumer Data Industry Association, which represents credit reporting bureaus, spent $264,000 in the first quarter lobbying on data privacy legislation, according to a disclosure report.
The organization lobbied on proposals intended to prevent identity theft and protect Social Security numbers and other personal information, according to the amended report posted online May 8 by the House clerk's office.
The group's members and affiliates include the three major credit reporting bureaus _ Equifax Inc., TransUnion LLC and Experian _ as well as commercial data brokers such as Alpharetta, Ga.-based ChoicePoint Inc.
In the first three months of this year, the association lobbied Congress, the Federal Trade Commission, the White House and the departments of Treasury, Commerce and Justice.
