The president and CEO of Churchill Downs says he's willing to sit down with members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to talk about safety issues facing the horse racing industry.
Robert Evans says the company will do everything in its power to promote the safety and welfare of its horses following the death of Eight Belles. The 3-year-old filly was euthanized on the track after breaking both front legs at the Kentucky Derby.
A representative for PETA spoke briefly with Evans at the track Thursday following the company's annual shareholder meeting. PETA is asking the track to consider replacing the dirt track with synthetic surfaces and requiring horses be at least 3-years-old before starting a racing career.
