The Nasdaq 100 index ended lower on Tuesday, with the largest percentage declines posted by beverage company Hansen Natural Corp., Stericycle Inc., and DirecTV Group Inc.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, declined 9.57 points to 1,903.74. The broader Nasdaq composite fell 17.46 points to 2,368.28.
Hansen's stock lost $2.78, or 8.2 percent, to $31.21 following release of consumer confidence data that came in well below expectations.
Medical waste management company Stericycle's stock slipped $2.16, or 4 percent, to $51.59.
Shares of satellite television company DirecTV shed $1.05, or 3.9 percent, to $25.88.
On the rising side, shares of China-based digital media company Focus Media Holding Ltd. gained $2.08, or 7.8 percent, to $28.43. The stock touched a 52-week low of $26.23 during the session.
Shares of Lam Research Corp. rose $2.50, or 6.9 percent, to $38.53, after a Goldman Sachs analyst upgraded the semiconductor manufacturing equipment maker and added it to a list of preferred stocks.
Shares of server and software maker Sun Microsystems Inc. increased 46 cents, or 4.1 percent, to $11.60, after hitting a 52-week low of $11.05.
