Shares of utility companies closed higher Monday as the broader market ended mixed amid concerns over the price of oil, which soared to another record.
Oil traded above $143 a barrel before pulling back to finish at $140 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 1.62, or 0.13 percent to finish at 1,280. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones industrials added 3.50 points to 11,350.01, and the Nasdaq composite lost 22.65, or nearly 1 percent, to 2,292.98.

Pepco Holdings Inc., up 77 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $25.65
Consolidated Edison Inc., up 67 cents to $39.09
Southern Co., up 49 cents to $34.92
