The Dow Jones industrial average ended higher on Tuesday, after UBS analyst Eric Wasserstrom upgraded shares of credit card issuer American Express Co.
Wasserstrom raised his rating on the stock to "Neutral" from "Sell," lifting the stock $2.35, or 6.2 percent, to $40.02.
Shares of Citigroup Inc. rose 37 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $17.13, but set a 52-week low of $16.25 earlier in the session.
General Motors Corp. shares gained 25 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $11.75, as the automaker held off Toyota Motor Corp. to retain its traditional U.S. sales lead, even though U.S. sales last month declined 18.2 percent.
The blue chip index rose 32.25 to 11,382.26.
On the losing side, shares of Alcoa Inc., Microsoft Corp., and Coca-Cola Co. declined.
Aluminum maker Alcoa saw its stock decline $1.18, or 3.3 percent, to $34.44.
Shares of Microsoft lost 64 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $26.87, and set a 52-week low of $26.44.
Shares of Coca-Cola declined 98 cents to $51, and set a 52-week low of $50.92 earlier in the session. Muhtar Kent was named chief executive of the Atlanta-based company, replacing Neville Isdell.
