Mercedes-Benz USA, a unit of Germany's Daimler AG, said Tuesday its June U.S. sales rose on strong demand for the company's new smart fortwo model.
Mercedes sold 22,121 vehicles last month, up 12.9 percent from 19,589 in the same month of 2007. Adjusted for three less selling days in June compared with this month compared with last, Mercedes sales rose 27 percent.
Sales of Mercedes-Benz USA vehicles were slightly down at 19,576, from 19,589 in the year-ago period. But Daimler sold 2,545 smart fortwo vehicles last month, a tiny two-seater that hit the U.S. market in January of this year.
So far this year, Mercedes total sales are up 10.5 percent to 130,678 vehicles from 118,240 at the same time last year. Adjusted for one less selling day in the first six months of this year compared with last, Mercedes sales are up 11.2 percent.
Daimler's U.S. shares fell to a 52-week low in afternoon trading. The stock lost $1.77, or 2.9 percent, to $59.90. In the last 52 weeks, the shares have ranged from $61.20 to $111.65.
