Opening Glance: Utility company stocks open mixed

Shares of utility companies opened mixed Tuesday as the broader market started the third quarter by extending the previous quarter's decline.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 11.09, or 0.87 percent, to 1,268.91.

How some utilities are trading:

American Electric Power Co. Inc. fell 26 cents to $39.97.

Pepco Holdings Inc. rose 10 cents to $25.75.

Consolidated Edison Inc. fell 24 cents to $38.85.

Southern Co. rose 13 cents to $35.05.
