Telecommunications service providers opened mixed Thursday as the broader market wavered after a report on the service sector came in much weaker than expected but unemployment held steady. Low-cost wireless carriers Leap Wireless International Inc. and MetroPCS Communications Inc. tumbled after Metro's subscriber numbers disappointed investors.
How some key telecom stocks performed Thursday:
Verizon Communications Inc. rose 8 cents to $35.72.
AT&T Inc. fell 43 cents to $32.46.
Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 18 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $8.56.
MetroPCS fell $1.83, or 11 percent, to $15.35.
Leap fell $3.10, or 7.6 percent, to $37.57.
