Drug developers Wyeth and Progenics Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Thursday European regulators approved Relistor as a treatment for constipation related to pain drugs taken by terminally ill patients.
The injectable drug relieves opioid-induced constipation for patients with advanced illness when laxatives aren't sufficient. The drug will be rolled out on a country-by-country basis, with the first launch expected to occur later this month.
Relistor is already approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the same use.
Shares of Madison, N.J.-based Wyeth rose 55 cents to close at $46.99, while shares of its partner, Tarrytown, N.Y.-based Progenics, fell 32 cents, or 2.1 percent, to close at $14.82.
