Telecommunications service providers closed mixed Monday as the broader market retreated amid worries about the financial sector, including the possibility of more financial troubles for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Canada's BCE Inc. gained in the first U.S. trading day after the company said it agreed to the terms of a $35 billion sale to a group of investors.
How some key telecom stocks performed Monday:
Verizon Communications Inc., fell 32 cents to $35.43.
AT&T Inc. rose 10 cents to $32.68.
Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 12 cents to $8.63.
BCE rose $3.90, or 11.2 percent, to $38.65.
