Shares of utility companies opened higher Monday as a stronger dollar cut oil prices fell as much as $5 to under $141 a barrel as the dollar gained strength.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 9.72, or 0.77 percent, to 1,272.62.
Here is a look at how some utilities fared in morning trading:
American Electric Power Co. rose 14 cents to $39.70.
Pepco Holdings Inc. rose 30 cents to $25.43.
Consolidated Edison Inc. rose 33 cents to $38.50.
Southern Co. rose 11 cents to $35.43.
