Shares of biotechnology companies closed higher Tuesday as analysts anticipate a mostly positive string of second-quarter earnings reports for key biotechnology companies in the coming weeks.

Here's how several key biotechnology stocks performed Tuesday:

Gilead Sciences Inc., up $1.86, or 3.6 percent, to $53.53.

Amgen Inc., up 11 cents to $50.38.

Biogen Idec Inc., up $4.07, or 7 percent, to $62.94.

Genentech Inc., up $1.98, or 2.6 percent, to $77.91.
