The Nasdaq 100 index rose Thursday and followed Wall Street higher after Dow Chemical Co. offered to buy Rohm and Haas Co. for over $15 billion.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, gained 20.39 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,839.57. The broader Nasdaq composite added 22.96 points, or 1 percent, to 2,257.85.
Shares of Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. gained 13 cents, or 6.5 percent, to $2.13.
Shares of Virgin Media Inc. rose 69 cents, or 6 percent, to $12.13.
Shares of Foster Wheeler Ltd. gained $3.35, or 5.5 percent, to $64.58, following shares of heavy construction companies higher.
On the declining side, shares of casino and resort operator Wynn Resorts Ltd. retreated $7.62, or 9.8 percent, to $69.94. The stock touched a 52-week low of $69.27 during the session.
Shares of NII Holdings Inc. declined $2.61, or 5.8 percent, to $42.76.
Shares of United Airlines parent UAL Corp. fell 24 cents, or 5.4 percent, to $4.17 as the price of oil rose.
