A subsidiary of coal giant Massey Energy Co. has been cited for a violation state investigators say contributed to the May 16 electrocution of a worker at a West Virginia mine.
Investigators conclude in a report issued Tuesday that 24-year-old electrician Nathan Dove died partly because no one cut the power to a piece of equipment he was repairing at Massey's Aracoma Alma No. 1 Mine. Investigators say Dove tried to cut a live wire on the shuttle car, which had not been locked so it couldn't be energized nor tagged to alert miners it was being repaired.
Mine inspectors issued eight other citations for noncontributing violations found during the investigation.
Richmond, Va.-based Massey did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A high profile fire at Aracoma killed two miners in January 2006.
