Suriname wants to create a state-owned aluminum company and obtain more revenue from its thriving bauxite industry.
The natural resources minister of the South American country says officials will talk about details this week. An estimated cost was not released.
Several international companies are seeking to establish a mining-and-aluminum industry in the bauxite-rich area of Bakhuys, west of the capital of Paramaribo.
Minister Gregory Rusland said Tuesday that the government also is negotiating with Australian-based BHP Billiton Ltd. to build a hydroelectric dam and an aluminum-melting plant in Bakhuys.
Bauxite is the main source of aluminum and one of Suriname's top commodities.
