NEW YORK (AP) _ Shares of Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. soared Thursday on reports of buyout talks between Barr and industry leader Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. The speculation also lifted shares of other generic drug makers.

NEW YORK (AP) _ Chip stocks traded higher Thursday, with Catalyst Semiconductor Inc. soaring with word that it will be purchased by ON Semiconductor Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. gaining in advance of its second-quarter report.

NEW YORK (AP) _ Shares of packaging makers staged a broad-based rally Thursday as the price of natural gas, which both powers their plants and goes into making plastics, continued to fall.
