Baltimore Gas and Electric Company said more than 3,000 customers in Baltimore and Westminster are participating in a pilot program aimed at helping them better manage energy usage.

The smart meters program runs from July to November 2008 and will test two-way communication via secure radio frequency between the customer's meter and a meter data management system.

Utility officials said since energy usage is tracked hourly, customers will get more energy management options. They said customers will be able to participate in programs that offer lower electric rates during off-peak hours and Internet access to their daily energy usage information.

BGE, whose parent company is Constellation Energy Group Inc., hopes to start using the program systemwide next year. Meter installations should be completed by 2012.
