Continental Airlines Inc. asked for antitrust immunity from the Department of Transportation on Wednesday as it moves closer to joining the Star Alliance.
Continental wants to establish a trans-Atlantic joint venture with UAL Corp.'s United Airlines, Lufthansa, and Air Canada. A joint venture with antitrust immunity allows the airlines to share revenue and coordinate schedules.
Continental also plans to begin code-sharing with United, under which they would sell tickets on each other's flights.
Continental said it expects to join the Star Alliance and begin code-sharing with United in the fourth quarter of 2009.
Last month Continental said it would leave the SkyTeam Alliance for the Star Alliance. The move was a reaction to Delta Air Lines Inc.'s plan to buy out Northwest Airlines Corp., which would create the world's largest airline if the deal closes late this year as planned. Delta and Northwest are both part of SkyTeam.
Continental shares rose $1.54, or 11.6 percent, to close at $14.80.
