Panic 2008... Profit 2009!

Fool -- Now's the time to invest! David and Tom Gardner's new book reveals their strategy for million dollar wealth.

Stocks that moved substantially or traded heavily Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Stock Market:

NYSE

Ford Motor Co., down 92 cents at $5.11

The struggling automaker posted its worst quarterly performance in its history with a $8.67 billion loss, partly due to the falling value of its truck plants.

3M Co., up 25 cents at $71.05

Adjusted quarterly profit beat estimates on strong overseas sales and 2008 operating profit will rise at least 10 percent, the manufacturing conglomerate said.

Dow Chemical Co., down $1.13 at $33.11

Sharply higher raw material and energy costs caused quarterly profit to fall 27 percent, despite two price hikes and record sales, the chemical maker said.

Southwest Airlines Co., down 98 cents at $14.90

Fuel price hedging helped the airline operator post a profitable quarter, beating estimates, while most competitors posted losses on surging oil costs.

RadioShack Corp., up $1.93 at $15.95

Quarterly sales in stores open at least a year surged 6.9 percent, helping the electronics retailer to beat estimates with adjusted earnings.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., up 23 cents at $22.12

A weak dollar boosted foreign sales while several key medicines enjoyed higher sales, lifting second-quarter profit 8 percent, the drugmaker said.

NASDAQ

Qualcomm Inc., up $7.61 at $52.43

The world's largest maker of cell phone chips said a licensing settlement with Nokia Corp. could add 7 cents to 13 cents per share to fiscal year profit.

Amazon.com Inc., up $8.18 at $78.72

Quarterly profit more than doubled, topping expectations, and the Internet retailer boosted its full-year revenue outlook.
