PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Mine Safety Appliances Co., which makes respiratory and safety equipment, said Monday its second-quarter profit rose 15 percent on higher sales of products, including self-contained breathing apparatuses and head protection gear.

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Ducommun Inc., a provider of engineering and manufacturing services for the aerospace and defense industries, said Monday its second-quarter profit jumped 28 percent due to strong product sales.

MELROSE PARK, Ill. (AP) _ Alberto-Culver Co., which makes beauty-care products including Alberto VO5 and Nexxus, said Monday fiscal third-quarter profit slipped 16 percent on restructuring charges and a loss from discontinued operations.

WEST BEND, Wis. (AP) _ Construction and agricultural equipment maker Gehl Co. said Monday its second-quarter profit plunged nearly 40 percent, citing the decline in the North American housing market and reduced spending from equipment rental companies.
