Shares of some top durable goods companies were up at the close of trading:
Black & Decker rose $1.57 or 2.6 percent, to $62.34.
Snap-On rose $.99 or 1.8 percent, to $56.99.
Stanley Works rose $.80 or 1.7 percent, to $47.80.
Whirlpool rose $1.14 or 1.4 percent, to $81.49.
