American Equity names 4 new board members

American Equity Investment Life Holding Co. said Tuesday it has expanded its board from nine to 13 members.

New to the West Des Moines-based company's board are Joyce Chapman, a retired banker; Steven Chapman, chief executive officer of business consultant ITA group Inc.; Debra Richardson, American Equity's senior vice president and secretary; and Wendy Carlson, American Equity's chief financial officer and general counsel.

Seven of the board's 13 members qualify as independent directors under the listing standards of the New York Stock Exchange, the company said in a statement.

American Equity provides annuity and insurance products with a primary emphasis on the sale of fixed-rate and index annuities.

Its shares closed 1.4 percent higher, or 13 cents, closing at $9.32. They have traded in a 52-week range of $6.82 to $11.63.
