Sample News Group has purchased three daily newspapers from GateHouse Media Inc.

The Pennsylvania-based newspaper chain bought The Morning Times of Sayre, Pa., The Standard-Journal of Milton, Pa., and the Palladium-Times of Oswego, N.Y.

The sale closed Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed.

George "Scoop" Sample, CEO of Sample News, and his wife published the Sayre paper from 1977 to 1991 before moving to Huntington to start Sample News Group.

The company operates 10 daily newspapers, 20 weeklies, two magazines and three commercial printing plants in five states.

GateHouse is based in Fairport, N.Y., and publishes 97 dailies, 291 weeklies and 130 shoppers, as well as yellow pages directories.

GateHouse stock was trading at 61 cents, up 1 penny or 1.6 percent, Wednesday morning.
