Shares of some top insurers companies were down at the close of trading:

American Internation fell $1.36 or 6.0 percent, to $21.22.

MBIA fell $.48 or 2.9 percent, to $15.93.

MGIC Investments fell $.46 or 4.7 percent, to $9.34.

XL Capital fell $1.20 or 6.1 percent, to $18.62.
