Salix Pharmaceuticals Ltd. said Monday it filed a lawsuit against Novel Laboratories Inc. over its colonoscopy preparation tablet, OsmoPrep.

Salix said the lawsuit is in response to Somerset, N.J.-based Novel's application with the Food and Drug Administration to market a generic version of OsmoPrep before the patent expires in 2013. Salix filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
