Lawn-products maker The Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. said Tuesday it named Mark R. Baker president and chief operating officer, effective Oct. 1.

Baker has been a board member since 2004 and was most recently president and chief executive of Gander Mountain Co., an outdoor retailer.

He has also served as chief operating officer of home-improvement company The Home Depot Inc.

James Hagedorn relinquishes the president title but remains chairman and chief executive.

The company said in September 2007 it hired an executive search firm to find candidates for a new chief operating officer position.
