MF Global Ltd. said Thursday that Global Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Christopher J. Smith has resigned.

The options and futures brokerage promoted Bernard W. Dan, who has been with the company since June, to president and global COO. Dan previously served as North American COO.

Before joining MF Global, Dan was President and CEO of the Chicago Board of Trade.

MF Global has expanded its personnel over the past several months, including appointing Tracy Lowery Whille as its new chief compliance officer in June.
