Hospital operator Health Management Associates Inc. said Monday it named Gary Newsome as president and chief executive to replace Burke W. Whitman, who has departed to pursue military service opportunities.

The appointment is effective immediately.

Newsome spent the last 10 years with Community Health Systems Inc., and was in charge of hospital operations for a division that included Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Newsome had worked at Health Management Associates from 1993 to 1998 as a divisional vice president of group operations, and assistant vice president of group operations and hospital chief executive.

Whitman became CEO of Health Management Associates in June 2007.
