China-based baby formula maker Synutra International Inc. said it has stopped buying milk from two regions in China that may have been the source of milk contaminated with the chemical melamine.
Synutra said last week that a Chinese agency had found melamine in the company's U-Smart products. It said the melamine may have come from milk suppliers in the Hebei and Inner Mongolia regions of the country.
The company said Friday night it has also temporarily suspended production at facilities in the region until milk supplies are "safe" in those areas.
Synutra has already recalled its U-Smart products and all products that contain milk from Hebei and Inner Mongolia regions with the exception of its Super line which has been tested to be free of melamine.
Synutra said it is assessing the value of the products it recalled.
